Day 6 - Design system and typography (Part II)

6 Jul 2023

Work hours: 2.5 hrs

Yesterday, I dove into the world of design systems by watching a couple of YouTube videos. Today, I decided to put my learnings into action and develop my very own design system, starting with typography.

Choosing the right font is a crucial step in creating the desired feeling for a design. Typography has always fascinated me—I'm constantly amazed by how font designers can craft unique styles and how even the smallest changes in the shape of a font can make a profound impact on how it's perceived by the audience.

I took my time browsing through different design and typography websites in search of fonts that captured my attention. Looking and observing is an essential part of honing my design sense. The more I immerse myself in visuals, the more my design sensibilities develop, and I gain a better understanding of what sets certain designs apart. This habit of observing is not only crucial for visual design but also for UX design. To create exceptional experiences, we need to immerse ourselves, understand the user's perspective, and build upon that knowledge.

Speaking of inspiration, here are a few images I stumbled upon during my font hunting journey:

After gathering inspiration, I began experimenting with font pairings and selecting the fonts for my website. So far, I've chosen a sans-serif font for the headings and a serif font for the body. In future articles, I'll dive deeper into my thought process behind these choices and explain why they fit my vision.

Once I finalized my font selection, I moved on to building the typography scale using Figma. When it came to scaling, I initially tried using the golden ratio to create the scale. However, I felt that the variations were too subtle and might not be enough to meet my specific needs. I plan to do some more research and see how other designers utilize the golden ratio specifically for web design and font scaling.

Stay tuned for more updates on my design system journey and the exciting discoveries along the way!
